By Kate EdwardsThe #WomenofLouisiana community is celebrating a big win on Tuesday when the Louisiana Legislature passed a $5.2 billion relief package to address a massive wave of maternal health care inequities.
The legislation, known as the “Women’s Health Program,” will provide $1.2 million for early childhood education and $1 million for maternal health and newborn care.
It also includes $3.3 million to increase access to low-cost mental health services.
The funding is part of a $1 billion plan approved by the governor in March.
The measure was also approved by Republicans in the Senate, who will now consider it as part of the 2018 budget.
In addition to the $1,400 increase in funding, it will add $600 million to the state’s emergency relief account, which will be used to help cover the cost of the new state-wide mental health care plan, the state Department of Mental Health said in a statement.
The Louisiana House of Representatives passed the measure on Tuesday, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.
The Senate approved the measure last week.
It will take effect immediately.
The Women’s Health Initiative, which began as a pilot program in Louisiana, was designed to help women, particularly low-income women, access care while also providing financial resources to support their families, according a statement from Gov.
John Bel Edwards.
This included helping them purchase health insurance, paying their rent and paying for medications, the governor said.
It’s a huge accomplishment and we applaud the women of Louisiana who put their trust in us and our administration, the statement added.
The program will also allow women to access more services in their community, the department said.
As of January 1, Louisiana had the nation’s second highest maternal mortality rate, according the CDC.
It is the highest in the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The new measure, approved by Democrats, will give state and local governments more flexibility to manage their mental health programs, according Gov.
The plan includes $300 million for the state to create an independent program for mental health treatment for women in mental health crisis, which has not been done in the state, Landrieo said in the statement.
In order to meet this new funding, the Department of Public Health and Hospitals will create a mental health agency that will have an emphasis on prevention and treatment, according Landriea.
The agency will be headed by a pediatrician and an occupational therapist, according her statement.
